The Turkish hammam, also known as a Turkish bath, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Its origins can be traced to the Roman baths, which were later adapted and perfected by the Ottomans. The hammam became an integral part of Ottoman culture and social life.
The concept of the Turkish hammam revolves around the combination of physical and spiritual cleansing. It served not only as a place for personal hygiene but also as a social hub where people from various walks of life could gather, relax, and engage in conversation. The hammam experience involves a series of rituals, including steam bathing, scrubbing, and massage, all aimed at purifying the body and soul, promoting overall well-being.
Süleymaniye Hamamı: The best Turkish Hammam for Couples
A beautiful experience of all the senses, both relaxing and unique. This was without a doubt our best activity we did in Istanbul. We wanted a super authentic experience of the real Hammam bath. Many hammams have undergone modernization, and only a handful provide a truly authentic experience. It’s even harder to find a place as a couple; there are very few where couples are together for the whole process.
We went to Süleymaniye Hamamı and I am so happy with our choice. The building is beautiful;the aura, the vibe of the place was so serene, so pure. It felt like I was connecting with history. I was back in time, really immersed in a special cultural experience. We felt deeply relaxed, felt a certain kind of connection within ourselves. It’s even more fascinating if you consider the history of the place! It’s mind-blowing that Suleyman the Magnificent was bathing in the same building in the fifteen hundreds.
The door is not the easiest stop to find from the street. Once we got there we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff. You really don’t need to bring anything with you. They provided cotton swimsuits, towels and wooden shoes for the hamam, and then towels afterwards; and a water bottle. We had our tiny small private locker room to keep our clothes and belongings and change to get ready for the Hammam. They sent us to the steam room. There were 2 more couples with us. The steam room is pretty huge and there was plenty of space to lay down on the marble slabs.
After 30 mins for steam (which felt so good) each of us got our own masseuse, very professional gentlemen, who scrubbed us and massaged us with foam. Shampoo was optional, but I’d recommend it.
They wrap you all around in clean, dry, warm towels. You can stay for longer if you want. Afterwards, they provide more water and offer soft drinks options – Turkish tea, apple tea or coffee. And some relaxing oil for the wrists. It’s a very peaceful experience and we left feeling as though we were floating on a cloud.
